Air quality in seven places across Odisha has slipped into the ‘poor’ category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The affected areas include Angul, Barbil, Bileipada, Keonjhar, Nayagarh, Rourkela, and Suakati. Angul reported a ‘poor’ air quality index (AQI) of 257 with PM2.5 as the major pollutant. Other areas like Balasore, Baripada, Brajarajnagar, Byasanagar, Cuttack, and Rairangpur recorded varying AQI levels ranging from moderate to poor. Bhubaneswar, on the other hand, had a satisfactory AQI with a value of 91, and major pollutants were carbon monoxide (CO) and PM2.5. Lower levels of air pollution significantly improve heart and respiratory health in both the short and long term.
