AN IMPRESSIVE FEAT FOR BIRD CONSERVATION! OVER 200 MANGROVE PITTA BIRDS SPOTTED IN ODISHA’S BHITARKANIKA NATIONAL PARK.

In a recent bird census conducted at Odisha’s Bhitarkanika National Park, an impressive count of over 200 Mangrove Pitta birds was recorded. The census, carried out across three out of the park’s five ranges, revealed a significant presence of these colorful avian species. The sightings occurred primarily in the Mahakalpada, Rajnagar, and Kanika forest ranges, with Kanika range reporting the highest count of 32 birds.

A total of 36 teams, comprising 72 forest officials, participated in the counting exercise, reflecting the collaborative effort involved in monitoring the avian population. The census results indicate a notable increase from the previous year, with 218 Mangrove Pitta birds spotted compared to 179 in 2023.

The Mangrove Pitta, locally known as the ‘Nabarangi’ bird, is distinguished by its vibrant plumage and is considered nearly threatened. Its presence in the Bhitarkanika area contributes to the biodiversity richness of the region, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts in safeguarding its habitat.
