“Badi Nrusingha Bije,” a significant ritual at the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, aims to ward off natural disasters and pandemics. Held annually on the ‘Charturthi Tithi’ of the Chaitra month, the deity is carried through the Lion’s Gate in a palanquin to four ashrams in the town. Originating from the pandemic of 1903-05, this ritual is believed to bring divine assurance during difficult times. It signifies the Lord’s protection and care for his devotees, as he manifests as Badi Nrusingha to safeguard them from ailments and hardships.
