HISTORIC RAMBHA PALACE, VENUE OF FIRST ‘UTKAL SAMMILANI’ SESSION, RESTORED AND TRANSFORMED INTO HERITAGE PALACE HOTEL ON UTKAL DIVAS

Situated on the serene banks of Chilika Lake, the Rambha Palace stands as a testament to Odisha’s rich history and cultural significance. Built in 1791-92 by Thomas Snodgrass, the Collector of Ganjam, the palace witnessed several transitions, from royal residences to pivotal moments in Odia movement.

King Rama Krushna Mardaraj of Khallikote, facing financial turmoil, sold it to F.J.V. Minchin, the owner of the Aska Sugar Factory, before it became the abode of King Harihar Mardaraj. Notable figures like Lord Curzon and Utkal Gourav Madhusudan Das graced its halls, setting the stage for significant events.

The palace hosted the inaugural session of ‘Utkal Sammilani’ and subsequent Utkal Union Conferences, shaping the Odia movement’s course. King Harihar Mardaraj’s advocacy for Odia unity echoed within its walls, influencing pivotal commissions and discussions on Odisha’s future.

From hosting high dignitaries like Mahatma Gandhi to pivotal commissions like the Phillip-Duff Commission, Rambha Palace remains an emblem of Odisha’s struggle and resilience. Its walls echo the aspirations and dreams of the Odia people, making it a cherished monument in Odisha’s history.
