India has gained operational rights to the Sittwe Port in Myanmar, following the success of the Chabahar Port in Iran. Situated in Myanmar’s Rakhine State on the Bay of Bengal, Sittwe Port is a key component of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP), jointly developed by India and Myanmar. This strategic move aims to enhance connectivity with India’s northeastern states, bypassing the Siliguri Corridor. The infrastructure at Sittwe Port, constructed with India’s assistance, is now ready for operation, providing India with another vital maritime foothold in the Indo-Pacific region to counterbalance China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
