Odisha recorded its first heatwave-related death as temperatures soared, with Balasore reaching 39.6°C. Laxmikanta Sahu (62) from Balasore succumbed to sunstroke on April 15. The state, experiencing six heatwave days in April, issued yellow warnings for several districts. Two earlier deaths, initially suspected as heat-related, were determined not to be sunstroke. Over 70 individuals have been hospitalised due to heat-related illnesses, with Sundargarh district reporting the highest cases. The Special Relief Commissioner predicts relief from the heatwave by April 21, with anticipated thunderstorm activity providing respite. Odisha typically sees one to three heatwave days in April.
